LA Dodgers Opener: Joe Torre Shows He’s Got it

So the home opener for the Dodgers today showed that even with a new team and some pretty inexperienced players Joe Torre has what it takes to win baseball games. What I would live to see more than anything else is for Joe to destroy the Yankees in a sweep of the 2008 World Series.

While I'm not sure if this is very likely since the Yankees have the money to buy the talent they need I think Georgie in the Bronx basically gave away one of the best managers that the game has seen in quite some time. I would argue that even though my Red Sox have won the World Series two times in the past four years, there is not one year where the Yankees did not put up a strong fight for the AL East title. I think the fact that Joe also won so many of the national titles with the Yankees is a testament to his ability to manage a team and why you would get rid of a successful manager is beyond me.

I think this is yet another situation where Georgie threw a temper tantrum and decided that if his managers couldn't always win the World Series then they weren't going to be part of his team. I hope this proves to be a huge mistake for the Yankees, I still don't know one Yankees fan that can believe they fired Torre and they deserve what is coming their way for doing so.

Woman Avoids Squirrel, Rodent Still Gets it in the End

Three injured in squirrel-related crash

SOUTH MOUNTAIN -- Three people were injured in a two vehicle crash about 1:45 p.m. Saturday after a woman swerved to avoid a squirrel in the road on U.S. 40A near Moser Road, according to Maryland State Police in Hagerstown.

Amy Deosaran, 32, of Middletown, was driving a 2002 Acura MDX east on U.S. 40A when she saw the squirrel, police said. The Acura struck a westbound 1995 Toyota Tacoma driven by Philip N. Kisner, 50, of Martinsburg, W.Va., head on.

Toyota passenger Karen Lynn Kisner, 50, Deosaran, and her 9-year-old son were taken to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. Philip Kisner refused treatment. Everyone was wearing seat belts and the child was in a child safety restraint.

Deosaran was charged with failure to drive right of center, police said.

After the crash, the squirrel again attempted to cross U.S. 40A but did not make it, police said. The squirrel was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle.

OK folks... This is a life lesson to all of the PETA people out there to remember that a squirrel is not worth possibly killing three people. Seriously, she swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid a squirrel and sent three people to the hospital, putting her own son in harms way. The ironic part is that the damn squirrel was then hit by another car with a driver smart enough not to swerve into traffic to avoid the rodent.

Please people, if for no reason then getting yourselves mentioned in the Darwin awards, don't swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid a rodent that there are millions of around. It just is not worth killing someone over.

MLB 2008 – Nationals Opener

So it's that time of year again, when we all don our favorite team's hats, gather around at the ballpark or the TV and watch our favorite players play America's pass time. Today, the Washington Nationals play the Atlanta Braves in the first game ever played at the new Nationals Park.

I must say that the park is beautiful and the Nationals are lucky to have such a great new venue to play for their fans. This new ballpark has me excited about the new season of Hagerstown Suns baseball as well. So excited that I am picking up my old baseball card collecting hobby again if not for me than for my kids who I hope share the same excitement about the game that I do. I figure if I start collecting again now, in another 13 years when they are old enough to appreciate the sport and the hobby.

So far I went ahead and purchased the complete Topps 2007 set and a bunch of new card pocket pages for my 3-ring binders. I forgot how much I love doing this and this year is going to be a lot of fun.

It’s A Hell of Weekend to be in DC

You can't help but feel good about this weekend in DC. The National Marathon is being run, the Cherry Blossom Festival is ready for business and the new Nationals ball park is opening which brings a sense of renewal to a city that is far too often associated with violence and poverty.

I know I will be there tomorrow partaking in many of the activities that will be going on in the city. I miss having the easy access to DC that I had when I lived closer to the metro than in Hagertucky. It used to be about an hour into the city center, now it is two hours but that doesn't phase me. What does amaze me though is the amount of people who live in Hagerstown that  don't go to DC for these events. My wife's parents still have yet to see the Cherry Blossom Festival which amazes me. They have lived in Hagerstown for over 20 years and have never gone, yet this will be my wife and I's third year in a row going. It truly is one of the most unique things DC has to offer and if you don't go at some point in your life then you are missing out.

I also have a goal of getting to a Nats game at least once this year, while I can never truly love any team other than the Red Sox being from NH, the Nationals are the second in line. They were the surprise story of Major League Baseball when they moved back to DC when the Expos were disbanded. They have been the underdog for several years now but do have some real talent which makes them a fun team to watch. With the new ball park I'm sure more people will be watching than ever before this year.

So seriously, what are you waiting for? hop in your car tomorrow morning, drive to the Shady Grove Metro station in Rockville and get into DC. You will be happy you did.

Higher Gas Prices Would "Ruin" Us

"I just don't understand the Democrats. Here they're preaching that George W. Bush has ruined the economy and we're in a recession, but yet they want to raise gas taxes 50 cents to save the earth. I would never vote for a Democrat after hearing this. This would ruin the whole U.S. if this would ever happen." - Boonsboro

The Herald-Mail

Ok, so I don't like high gas prices either, but in case you haven't noticed, the gas prices are tied to the commodities markets and the commodities markets fluctuate when you have things like wars in the Middle East. If you don't like high gas prices then maybe you should rethink being a republican who believes the gas tax is the worst thing that could happen. If you want to lower gas prices then you would do well to write a letter to your president and let him know that the instability in the middle east is what he really ought to actually be working on sorting out. Don't blame the Democrats for something that the Republicans are just as guilty for in many other forms.

Bush: Mr. Ethics Himself

"I am a Bush lover. The reason that I'm a President Bush lover is because he's fair, he's a good president, and he cares about values and morals; something that we can't say about a lot of other of our public officials. And I am a Republican, and I did pick up a rifle and I did fight for this country." - Hagerstown

The Herald-Mail

So he cares about values and Morals? When does going to war for a lie constitute a moral act? When does causing tens of thousands to lose their lives in a war that was a complete waste a moral act? When did morals include vetoing federal research grants for stem cells that could potentially fix numerous nervous system problems? When did supporting a clearly ineffective abstinence only sex education policy in Africa constitute as a morally sound thing to do when the policy is a complete failure?

I would argue he is also one of the least "Fair" presidents that we have seen in a long time. How many tax dollars did you save compared to the millionaires in this country under him? How have your job prospects faired during his tenure in office? I'll take a guess and argue that many of the jobs you might be looking for are no longer in the US.

The only thing that have faired well under George Bush are his own interests, the religious right, and the growth of hatred for the US among the rest of the humans on Earth. We are heading for one of the biggest shocks to our economy in a long time, our military is in shambles, we are in a war that we cannot ever "win" nor extricate ourselves from, and I honestly don't know if we can repair the damage we have done to our standing in the world community. Your rifle is not going to solve any of these problems and if you are a true fiscally conservative republican (which is actually what republicans are historically known for) you would not support George Bush.

New Social Network: Hagertucky!

I know, I know... I haven't been blogging much at all lately. In fact, I hardly have posted anything in the last month, but that is because my professional life has been taking over and my blogging life has been taking the blows from that. I did go ahead and setup a social network site for people in Hagertucky though which you all can go and sign up for here:

 http://hagertucky.ning.com/

Hopefully this will fill up fast and allow all of us Hagertuckians to hangout and swap contact information there. Networking is always good regardless if it is just for fun or for professional reasons. So go check it out and sign up today!

Now a Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum Member

So today I became a Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum member and I hope to start volunteering with them shortly as well. Walking into their small museum is like being in my basement when I was a kid, playing with our HO scale model train set. I never had anything like their elaborate setups, but it was still a lot of fun and I can't wait to get involved again. All of their volunteers love what they do and it is great to see that there are places where railroads still matter like Hagerstown.

So why not drop on by the roundhouse museum some time on a weekend? Maybe I'll see you there.

Tow Trucks and Four-Wheelers

So it's been a while since I posted, mostly because I have gotten sick of the political blogging for the time being since things are all about numbers at this point. But I saw something tonight that I have seen before in Hagertucky but never written about. This phenomenon is the use of tow trucks to carry around four-wheelers.

Why are tow trucks being used to carry around four-wheelers? Would it not be more cost effective to use  trailer? I think this is a uniquely western Maryland thing that would draw laughs in many places but in Hagertucky is looked upon as a perfectly normal thing to do. Having grown up in New Hampshire I am used to some pretty "hickish" things going on but this is a new one that I never saw growing up. I guess most of us up there just settled for a trailer to carry our snowmobiles and four-wheelers around with them and didn't get this creative. So I salute you four-wheeler carrying tow truck guy, you have proven to be more creative than my fellow New Hampshire natives.

Randy Pausch: Probably the Coolest Guy Ever

I think this is probably one of the most inspirational and at the same time sad things I have ever seen, and while it may repeat itself hundreds of times across the globe each year, to see someone that is so young and with such a young family. So far Randy has been doing very well and exceeded his doctor's expectations which I hope he continues to do for a long time. But even if this is not the case, I would recommend everyone take a look at his last lecture at CMU to see what it really takes to be satisfied when you know you have lived your life to the fullest.
