Cherry Blossom Festival 2008
The Cherry Blossom Festival was another success this year and from what I can tell it was one of the best attended as well. It was so well attended that the Smithsonian Metro stations were shutdown when we were trying to leave due to the crowds. In the end we ended up taking a cab to meet some family just over the river in Pentagon City but it was quite an ordeal to get there.
The best part about this year was that my parents made the trip down here to see them with us and it really is a unique experience. I was just glad to see them again and have them with my wife and I since they have not been down here in the three years that we have lived in Maryland. I was surprised to find that the law enforcement presence was smaller than I expected, we only saw a couple of park police and a few coast guard helicopters over head the entire time we were there.
Overall the trip was a huge success. The weather was good, my parents had fun and we met some family that I had not seen in over a decade. Hopefully next year will be just as good!

USMH to Get Almost Full Funding!
ANNAPOLIS - After weeks of haggling, state lawmakers chiseled out an agreement Friday that leaves Hagerstown's university campus with nearly full funding next year.
The compromise between the House and Senate guarantees the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown $2 million for fiscal year 2009.
"We won," Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, said after Friday's session, which capped more than a week of public and private talks. "It was a tough battle. I'm not kidding. It was as tough as cold war."
We pulled through! After weeks of uncertainty and the chance that Hagerstown may lose one of its most valuable assets, the people of Washington county prevailed upon their lawmakers to choose the right path. Hagerstown is growing and it needs institutions of higher learning to continue teaching the next generation more valuable skills. Without this, Washington County will not have a chance at building its economic base by brining in more skilled workers and high-tech businesses.
Thank you to all who wrote their state delegates to make this happen.
Allegheny CS Majors Strike On April Fools Day
The Allegheny College CS Majors struck without mercy on April fools day this year, filling the CS department with balloons. Of course the CS professors had no idea what to do with the invaders but the following was overheard:
Dr. Kaphammer: My unit test did not predict this outcome!
Dr. Roos: Where in my database did I have this result stored?
Dr. Cupper: This doesn't look like Javar to me!
