Our Military at Sea and Abroad (Having Some Much Deserved Fun)

When I see videos like the following of our service men and women, it makes me remember that many of them are no younger than me, and like me at that age, I wanted to have fun too. But unfortunately, they are much less able to do so because they rose to the call of their nation to serve in a time of our need. So here are some of them having fun, being the 20 somethings that they are. Don't get mad because "those are your tax dollars" or because "they are supposed to be protecting us" since you are sitting on your butt watching this from home. They deserve all the downtime they can get and if they choose to entertain the rest of us with it and make us proud, why not?

Video to the song "Pump It" by the Black Eyed Peas:

Video to the song "Move Along" by the All American Rejects:

Video to the song of "Hey Ya" by Outkast:

Now for the grunts to get in on the action, the backbone of the ground forces, dancing to "What is Love":

And my personal favorite, a remake of the viral video "I'm On a Boat", the Navy doing their best impression. This video contains crude language and adult themes and is extremely NSFW, but if your OK with that and want to laugh then go ahead and watch it:

Pirates Threaten to Kill Captors in the Future

From the Denver Post:

"From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages)", Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old pirate, told The Associated Press from one of Somalia's piracy hubs, Eyl. "(U.S. forces have) become our
Extras No. 1 enemy."

I find this somewhat counter intuitive for these pirates. If they kill the Americans, then their lives are forfeit and they will never receive any money. Their ships will be sunk at once and they will end up just like these three that were shot. I'd say the take away lesson for them here is to never touch another US flagged ship.

People Being People

Many of you have probably not watched the "Where the Hell is Matt?" series of videos but I encourage you to do so. Why? Because you see people in them being themselves and it shows us that for the most part, everyone just wants to be happy, live their lives and we are not all that different from one another. Why not start watching now?

Seriously, Who Says the Cold War Had to End

So this week we have witnessed what very well could be the beginning of another era of extremely tense of era with a Russia that is intent on putting it self in the first or second spot in order of world super powers. The scary thought is that the only way that Russia could finance this type of second rise is to go right back where they came from and turn into a dictatorship with a centrally directed economy and industrial sector.

With Russia so willing to basically alienate itself from western Europe and the Americas, it is clear that the standard economic and political pressure channels are not going to work. If anyone has any sense they will back down from this incredibly dangerous situation. If anyone wanted to see what an M1A2 can do to a T-80 or a T-90 then this may be their chance if someone doesn't gain some common sense.

*** Edit ***

Per Mark's request below I will include one of the best mail call quotes I have ever read in the main body of this post:

I seen this story in the paper about the Russian troops invading Georgia, and I just want to say that you liberals that believe in gun control better do a rethink, because Georgia ain't all that far from Maryland. That's all I got to say.

Bush: Let the Overwatch Begin

410px-HalfLife2_WallaceBreenoverwatch

Yesterday on NPR I heard a story about how we are now going into the "overwatch" phase of the Iraq occupation and it just brought back memories of playing Halflife 2 and the Combine soldiers that Dr. Breen called "Overwatch" as well. It amazes me that we would call this operation a name like this as it is not something that evokes positive feelings by a country, its people or by people who disagree with the whole situation.

In fact the similarities are startlingly similar between the way Overwatch in Halflife 2 operated and the way we are in Iraq now. The US is trying to assert their dominance over a population that does not want to be conquered or converted into something they aren't. Democracy is fine, but they may not want US democracy or even our form of republican government. So instead we try and ram this ideology down their throats and expect them to like it? Force rarely achieve any success in these situations which is something it appears we have yet to learn. I would suggest all of you go play a couple of maps in Halflife 2 and look at the similarities, we may not be aliens taking over a planet, but we are still the outsiders asserting military rule on another state which is essentially the same deal.

Let Them Rot in Solitary for Life

So the terrorists that attacked the US on 9/11 want to die for their cause at the hands of US militar justice? I hope the military tribunal does not give them this satisfaction but rather locks them up in solitary confinement at a Federal supermax prision for the rest of their lives. Just keep them in a small cell, no TV, no religious materials, maybe a magazine or two but that is it. The last thing we want to do is allow these cowards to become the rallying cry for their causes.

So please, make Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and these criminals serve their time in prison alone, locked away from the world that they so desperately want to manipulate. That is what they truly deserve.

Polls are open from 7 AM through 8 PM and yoour employer must allow at least 2 hours on within this time frame for you to vote if you are scheduled to work and you would not normally have that amount of time off in between those hours.

For those of you voting in the Democratic primary, please consider Barack Obama for your party's nominee. Hope inspires us all to do more to further ourselves, our country and the world. Don't underestimate the power of this new found energy to move the United States in a new more positive direction that has not been seen since John F. Kennedy.

NPR: Army Blames ‘Miscommunication’ in Fort Drum Flap

What was so surprising was that the people you spoke with gave you an account that not only was different from the account in these documents and [from] others I've spoken with, but that almost could not have been more opposite.

A: I know. Isn't that amazing? It sort of speaks to miscommunication, doesn't it?

Is there anything you'd like to say to the VA team at Fort Drum now?

A: I think it was the message we tried to convey a year ago, which is, "Hey, thanks for helping our soldiers. You're doing a terrific job. We think that the practices and behaviors exhibited is among the best we've seen. We want to encourage you to continue to help us, and we're very grateful for the assistance you're providing our warriors and our families."

NPR: Army Blames 'Miscommunication' in Fort Drum Flap

What kind of jerk says these kinds of things other than one who is trying to save his own butt after clearly turning a blind eye to the soldiers that have fought so hard in this country because he did not want to pay their benefits? This is one of the most unconscionable things I have ever seen done in my life and I hope that Eric Schoomaker and who ever this Col. Baker is looses their jobs for it. If the Army won't take care of the people that are on the ground then they shouldn't wonder why no one wants to be a part of their organization when they see recruitment numbers fall. As a patriotic American and one that believes in this country despite having problems with how this war has been fought, I cannot believe that someone who calls themselves an American did this. It disgusts me and I hope that I never see something like this again.

Why do People In Hagerstown Think Canadian Health Care is Great?

"This is to all the people that think the health care is so great in America. I saw something on the news the other day that was very fascinating. Canada has the highest life expectancy of any country on the North and South American continents. Now how could that be, with their socialized medicine, as you people call it? In fact, there was a survey about a year ago where they asked Canadians how they felt about their health care, and 88 percent said they were very satisfied. I'll bet you if they did a survey in the U.S., it wouldn't be that high. We have ... people die every year because they have no health insurance, and they just don't bother to go to doctors, so it says a lot about supposedly the wealthiest country in the world. Of course ... they have good retirements. America is just a country for the rich 10 percent anymore, and I used to love my country, but I couldn't care less anymore." - Hagerstown suburb

Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia

Why is it that people defend Canada's socialized health care so often in this area, this is at least the second time I have seen a statement like this in Mail Call? Is it because they don't understand what that really means or just that they have not really educated themselves on the facts of the situation. The truth is that unless you are going to die in the emergency room in a few minutes, the Canadian health care system will not take care of you well at all. Go ahead and try to get your cancer treated in Quebec and see how well that goes. You will find that there is no such thing as good cancer care because all of the specialists in the field have left due to impossibly low pay and bad conditions. Try finding an emergency room that is going to treat you for a serious concussion and you will find the same service level because you care able to walk on your own despite the fact that you may have a serious injury that could kill you in a few hours, days or months.

Again, unless you have seen the health care system there first hand as I have (my parents lived there for 1.5 years in Quebec) then I really don't think you can pass judgement on how great it is. Dig a little deeper and you will find a whole lot of bad an not a lot of good.
