Mail Call – A Home for $1000 a month? I’ll Take It!
"I would like to make a comment about the rent in this area. I think it's really ridiculous. I have to move, and I'm on a fixed income. I can find no homes for no less than $1,000, and I think it's just ridiculous." - Williamsport area
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
I'm not sure why you think $1000 per month is too much money, but try going closer to Frederick or Montgomery county before you complain. I used to live in Germantown and I was spending $1300 per month for a 850 square foot apartment. I moved out here and now spend $940 per month for twice the space which is a huge savings. The reality is that the rent will never go down in Hagerstown again, especially as Frederick becomes more built up in terms of commercial businesses and people start thinking of Washington County as a suburb of DC. The only way you will find cheaper rent is to continue heading west or into PA otherwise I wouldn't count on spending any less.
Mail Call – A Rarity, I Agree on a Political / Military Stance
"I would like for people to forget their 'I hate Bush and everything he does' for a few minutes and seriously think about what would happen if we left Iraq now. Iraq is full of terrorists of many kinds, including al-Qaida. This is a fact I got from my son, who was just there. Would you want to turn the country over to these 'people' who have no qualms about blowing women and children up, using Down Syndrome victims for their purposes, and have no regard for life? You would be throwing innocent people to the wolves, along with the oil revenue to use to spread their terror further. Terrorists are not like we are. They have one objective - to kill anyone who does not share their warped version of Islam. Please think before you speak."
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
For once I agree with something in mail call, this person is absolutely right that we could not simply up and leave in Iraq, as we would be turning it over to the Iranians which would be worse than what we've got now.
Here is where I stand:
- Establish a timeline that we can actually adhere to, one which provides a realistic amount of time for the Iraqi government to get their act together and shape up.
- Establish a realistic victory scenario. This is not wiping out all terrorism in the middle east, I have news for you all, it isn't going to happen. This should be more like getting a government together that would work to try and sort out the social issues without killing each other first.
- Begin a draw down of troops now. We need to make the Iraqi government realize that it is their country and they need to commit to training their soldiers to fill the gaps. If they can't agree on this then we may be destined to see the country slip away from us regardless of the progress militarily.
- Begin to seriously promote national unification under the banner of the state rather than that of individual sects. This is going to be the hardest thing to do and could take time, but to be truly successful this must happen.
I'm sure these could all be elaborated on quite a bit but since I am not running for national office I will put them out there for others to see and then hopefully policy makers will see them someday.
I Never Seen this New Fangled Math Before!
"I seen in the paper where they gave that Brandon Morris life in prison. He's a young kid. Imagine if he lives another 50 years - this all I'm saying - what's it gonna cost the state? I saw the other day where it costs $30,000 a year for each inmate. If he lives another 50 years - I just figured it out - it's gonna cost the taxpayers $2,280,000." - Funkstown
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
So I just though I would reiterate that some people in this area really need to refrain from ever attempting to do math that will result in some type of public display of their work. I'm sorry Funkstown, but last time I checked, $30,000 x 50 = $1,500,000 which means no one knows where your $2,280,000 number came from. Now if you had stated that he will live for another 76 years then you would be dead on and I would be going "Yay Funkstown! You can multiply correctly!" but alas, I cannot be so cheerful because you have proven that you can not multiply numbers very well at all. My advice... Get a calculator.
Watch Me Drive My Hummer and Laugh at You
"I want to make a comment from the person who said a Hummer is a big polluting machine. I personally own a Hummer, and for their information, a Hummer has a 30-gallon tank and uses the same amount of gas as any other SUV or large vehicle on the road. I only drive this about 15,000 miles a year, so therefore I'm not polluting the earth any more than someone who drives a four-door economic car that racks 25,000 to 30,000 miles a year. So before you go bashing a Hummer you need to get your facts straight. I pay my car payment, I can afford the gas, I don't live on welfare or assisted living, so what's the problem? I think the problem personally is that the average American can't afford a Hummer, so the problem here is just pure jealousy." - Rohrersville
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
Man, Mail call is at its best today. I'm jealous because you can afford a hummer? Wrong again, I'm actually ticked off because you drive one and assume that you are less at fault for pollution because you only drive it half as much as people that drive smaller cars. Actually, you still a polluting the air twice as much as me regardless of how you try and argue your way into feeling better about yourself. The fact that you can buy a big, fuel guzzling, useless car does not impress me or most people on the road and I would probably appreciate if you stayed away from me with your said Hummer. I love people who use incredibly flawed logic publicly in order to make statements that can't hold up under scrutiny.
Subprime Loans not the Lenders Fault
"I would like to encourage those who have a subprime loan and who may be facing foreclosure or risking other financial problems because of their mortgage to consult an attorney to inquire about a class action suit against the predatory, unscrupulous mortgage lenders who inflated the financial condition of a borrower, just to sell a mortgage. All the evidence you need is right in the news every day. These loans never should have been approved, and these lenders knew it up front. If you, the American citizen, were robbed at gunpoint or someone broke into your home, the thief would be held accountable, so the predatory lenders should be, too. They are stealing your emotional security as well as your financial security. I am not a person who has been duped by this scam. I am a concerned citizen who is saddened for those put in - so go for it." - Sharpsburg
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
I know this is going to sound insensitive, but quite honestly, a subprime loan is not the fault of the lender, no one forced a person to take it, they did so willingly. As a matter of fact, a bailout of people who went into these kind of loans actually hurts those of us that acted responsibly and did not jump at something we knew was too good to be true. If a 25 year old knows better than to go after an ARM because it is too risky then why should someone that has actually had a house before not understand this. Don't go and start lawsuits that take my tax dollars away because we have to fund regulation that provides some type of special assistance for reading contracts so people don't get confused when they try and buy a house. Personal responsibility is what should be emphasized here, do your research, read the fine print and if something is too good to be true then it probably is. I'm sorry if people not doing this has already taken its toll, but I don't think it is anyone's fault but their own. The best way to stop this type of lending is to vote with your dollars and not take out the loans, do this and lenders will stop offering them.
Mail Call Quotes of the Past 2 Weeks
"I only have one thing to say when I read the paper. People think they got taken with those bulbs, or the company's kind of went after them. But wait until the end of the year and see what happens when this new rate comes into effect. It's gonna be anywheres between 60 and 70 percent of what you're paying today. Then you'll have something to really complain about." - Halfway
Why would I complain about spending less again???
"I stopped off at Sheetz and got a pack of cigarettes today. They're up to $4.87, and the other day they was $3.57. That's up $1.20."
Some people need to go back and learn how to add and subtract again...
"I was reading your Mail Call on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and I just wanted to say I'm the lady that was in the Lexus at the grocery store, and yes, I am well-dressed and I carry myself well. Those were not my food stamp cards. Those were not my groceries. I work for an organization that shops for elderly people who cannot get out and do their own shopping. These people do deserve their food stamps. So the next time someone's in a grocery store and you see a well-dressed lady in a Lexus or a Cadillac or a Rolls Royce, why don't you walk up and ask us? We'll be glad to show you our badges and explain to you why we're using food stamp cards. Don't judge, and don't jump into it unless you know the facts." - Hagerstown
You have to admit though, it does look pretty bad when you are driving one of those to pick up food stamps. Why not drive a Toyota and then give the rest back to the people that need the food stamps?
