Full Text of the Declaration of Independence
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
It’s Time Again! – July 4th at Antietam National Battlefield!
It's time once again to pay tribute to the founding of this great nation in Washington County, Maryland. You will never find a better group of people than at Antietam National Battlefield Park this Saturday on the 4th of July. The 30,000 - 35,000 spectators of the event will be there once again this year and we are looking forward to see them all there.
We also look forward to seeing all of our veterans and current service members there to be recognized, your actions have allowed us to celebrate this day for the past 233 years. Please come and be recognized by the crowd, we all appreciate how hard you have worked and fought for us.

Don’t Forget About Memorial Day
This is a reminder to not forget about memorial day... Don't forget that there are many who cannot be home to enjoy the long weekend off, or the great sales when you are at the mall. Many Americans are simply struggling to survive and improve the lives of others in areas where they do not have many friends but they will survive because of the thoughts and best wishes from their family and friends.
To our forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea and anywhere else on the globe, a grateful nation says thanks and hopes that you will all return home safely soon. To those families of soldiers that have made their greatest sacrifice, we say " thank you" to you, your children and all those that come after because they have allowed us continue on today. To those veterans of previous generations, previous wars and other military actions we ask that you please share your stories with us. Let us share in your experiences so we are able to teach our children what it means to be patriotic, take pride in your country and understand that when duty calls our country has always responded with vigor and purpose.
If there is one thing we cannot loose, it is the shared experience of hardship during times of war and what that means to this nation. As long as their is injustice at home and abroad, the citizen soldier of the United States will be there to answer the call. To not instill this sense of spirit in our youngest generations will only lead us into a future where people no longer understand why it is sometimes necessary to risk everything to ensure that what we have remains secure and avaible to all future generations.
Thank you for all that you have done, thank you for all that you will do and do not dispair, for your country remembers all that you stand for.
Pirates Threaten to Kill Captors in the Future
From the Denver Post:
"From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages)", Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old pirate, told The Associated Press from one of Somalia's piracy hubs, Eyl. "(U.S. forces have) become our
Extras No. 1 enemy."
I find this somewhat counter intuitive for these pirates. If they kill the Americans, then their lives are forfeit and they will never receive any money. Their ships will be sunk at once and they will end up just like these three that were shot. I'd say the take away lesson for them here is to never touch another US flagged ship.
Hagerstown Federals Don’t Advance but are Winners
The Hagerstown Federals proved that they were winners tonight. They proved that they went to play the game of baseball and the went to win the game fairly and not just play for the tie breaker. While I don't like the way the tie was decided, I know that it takes a winner to play a game as it was meant to be, regardless of the technicalities surrounding the advancement to the semi-final round of play.
This post is to you Federals, we are so proud of your accomplishments and you have brought the people of the area together as we rallied around your accomplishments. We can't wait to have you back home so we can celebrate your amazing run at the Little League World Series.
Cherry Blossom Festival 2008
The Cherry Blossom Festival was another success this year and from what I can tell it was one of the best attended as well. It was so well attended that the Smithsonian Metro stations were shutdown when we were trying to leave due to the crowds. In the end we ended up taking a cab to meet some family just over the river in Pentagon City but it was quite an ordeal to get there.
The best part about this year was that my parents made the trip down here to see them with us and it really is a unique experience. I was just glad to see them again and have them with my wife and I since they have not been down here in the three years that we have lived in Maryland. I was surprised to find that the law enforcement presence was smaller than I expected, we only saw a couple of park police and a few coast guard helicopters over head the entire time we were there.
Overall the trip was a huge success. The weather was good, my parents had fun and we met some family that I had not seen in over a decade. Hopefully next year will be just as good!
MLB 2008 – Nationals Opener
So it's that time of year again, when we all don our favorite team's hats, gather around at the ballpark or the TV and watch our favorite players play America's pass time. Today, the Washington Nationals play the Atlanta Braves in the first game ever played at the new Nationals Park.
I must say that the park is beautiful and the Nationals are lucky to have such a great new venue to play for their fans. This new ballpark has me excited about the new season of Hagerstown Suns baseball as well. So excited that I am picking up my old baseball card collecting hobby again if not for me than for my kids who I hope share the same excitement about the game that I do. I figure if I start collecting again now, in another 13 years when they are old enough to appreciate the sport and the hobby.
So far I went ahead and purchased the complete Topps 2007 set and a bunch of new card pocket pages for my 3-ring binders. I forgot how much I love doing this and this year is going to be a lot of fun.
It’s A Hell of Weekend to be in DC
You can't help but feel good about this weekend in DC. The National Marathon is being run, the Cherry Blossom Festival is ready for business and the new Nationals ball park is opening which brings a sense of renewal to a city that is far too often associated with violence and poverty.
I know I will be there tomorrow partaking in many of the activities that will be going on in the city. I miss having the easy access to DC that I had when I lived closer to the metro than in Hagertucky. It used to be about an hour into the city center, now it is two hours but that doesn't phase me. What does amaze me though is the amount of people who live in Hagerstown that don't go to DC for these events. My wife's parents still have yet to see the Cherry Blossom Festival which amazes me. They have lived in Hagerstown for over 20 years and have never gone, yet this will be my wife and I's third year in a row going. It truly is one of the most unique things DC has to offer and if you don't go at some point in your life then you are missing out.
I also have a goal of getting to a Nats game at least once this year, while I can never truly love any team other than the Red Sox being from NH, the Nationals are the second in line. They were the surprise story of Major League Baseball when they moved back to DC when the Expos were disbanded. They have been the underdog for several years now but do have some real talent which makes them a fun team to watch. With the new ball park I'm sure more people will be watching than ever before this year.
So seriously, what are you waiting for? hop in your car tomorrow morning, drive to the Shady Grove Metro station in Rockville and get into DC. You will be happy you did.
