Our Military at Sea and Abroad (Having Some Much Deserved Fun)
When I see videos like the following of our service men and women, it makes me remember that many of them are no younger than me, and like me at that age, I wanted to have fun too. But unfortunately, they are much less able to do so because they rose to the call of their nation to serve in a time of our need. So here are some of them having fun, being the 20 somethings that they are. Don't get mad because "those are your tax dollars" or because "they are supposed to be protecting us" since you are sitting on your butt watching this from home. They deserve all the downtime they can get and if they choose to entertain the rest of us with it and make us proud, why not?

Don’t Forget About Memorial Day
This is a reminder to not forget about memorial day... Don't forget that there are many who cannot be home to enjoy the long weekend off, or the great sales when you are at the mall. Many Americans are simply struggling to survive and improve the lives of others in areas where they do not have many friends but they will survive because of the thoughts and best wishes from their family and friends.
To our forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea and anywhere else on the globe, a grateful nation says thanks and hopes that you will all return home safely soon. To those families of soldiers that have made their greatest sacrifice, we say " thank you" to you, your children and all those that come after because they have allowed us continue on today. To those veterans of previous generations, previous wars and other military actions we ask that you please share your stories with us. Let us share in your experiences so we are able to teach our children what it means to be patriotic, take pride in your country and understand that when duty calls our country has always responded with vigor and purpose.
If there is one thing we cannot loose, it is the shared experience of hardship during times of war and what that means to this nation. As long as their is injustice at home and abroad, the citizen soldier of the United States will be there to answer the call. To not instill this sense of spirit in our youngest generations will only lead us into a future where people no longer understand why it is sometimes necessary to risk everything to ensure that what we have remains secure and avaible to all future generations.
Thank you for all that you have done, thank you for all that you will do and do not dispair, for your country remembers all that you stand for.
Higher Gas Prices Would "Ruin" Us
"I just don't understand the Democrats. Here they're preaching that George W. Bush has ruined the economy and we're in a recession, but yet they want to raise gas taxes 50 cents to save the earth. I would never vote for a Democrat after hearing this. This would ruin the whole U.S. if this would ever happen." - Boonsboro
Ok, so I don't like high gas prices either, but in case you haven't noticed, the gas prices are tied to the commodities markets and the commodities markets fluctuate when you have things like wars in the Middle East. If you don't like high gas prices then maybe you should rethink being a republican who believes the gas tax is the worst thing that could happen. If you want to lower gas prices then you would do well to write a letter to your president and let him know that the instability in the middle east is what he really ought to actually be working on sorting out. Don't blame the Democrats for something that the Republicans are just as guilty for in many other forms.
Bush: Mr. Ethics Himself
"I am a Bush lover. The reason that I'm a President Bush lover is because he's fair, he's a good president, and he cares about values and morals; something that we can't say about a lot of other of our public officials. And I am a Republican, and I did pick up a rifle and I did fight for this country." - Hagerstown
So he cares about values and Morals? When does going to war for a lie constitute a moral act? When does causing tens of thousands to lose their lives in a war that was a complete waste a moral act? When did morals include vetoing federal research grants for stem cells that could potentially fix numerous nervous system problems? When did supporting a clearly ineffective abstinence only sex education policy in Africa constitute as a morally sound thing to do when the policy is a complete failure?
I would argue he is also one of the least "Fair" presidents that we have seen in a long time. How many tax dollars did you save compared to the millionaires in this country under him? How have your job prospects faired during his tenure in office? I'll take a guess and argue that many of the jobs you might be looking for are no longer in the US.
The only thing that have faired well under George Bush are his own interests, the religious right, and the growth of hatred for the US among the rest of the humans on Earth. We are heading for one of the biggest shocks to our economy in a long time, our military is in shambles, we are in a war that we cannot ever "win" nor extricate ourselves from, and I honestly don't know if we can repair the damage we have done to our standing in the world community. Your rifle is not going to solve any of these problems and if you are a true fiscally conservative republican (which is actually what republicans are historically known for) you would not support George Bush.
Mail Call – A Rarity, I Agree on a Political / Military Stance
"I would like for people to forget their 'I hate Bush and everything he does' for a few minutes and seriously think about what would happen if we left Iraq now. Iraq is full of terrorists of many kinds, including al-Qaida. This is a fact I got from my son, who was just there. Would you want to turn the country over to these 'people' who have no qualms about blowing women and children up, using Down Syndrome victims for their purposes, and have no regard for life? You would be throwing innocent people to the wolves, along with the oil revenue to use to spread their terror further. Terrorists are not like we are. They have one objective - to kill anyone who does not share their warped version of Islam. Please think before you speak."
Mail Call - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
For once I agree with something in mail call, this person is absolutely right that we could not simply up and leave in Iraq, as we would be turning it over to the Iranians which would be worse than what we've got now.
Here is where I stand:
- Establish a timeline that we can actually adhere to, one which provides a realistic amount of time for the Iraqi government to get their act together and shape up.
- Establish a realistic victory scenario. This is not wiping out all terrorism in the middle east, I have news for you all, it isn't going to happen. This should be more like getting a government together that would work to try and sort out the social issues without killing each other first.
- Begin a draw down of troops now. We need to make the Iraqi government realize that it is their country and they need to commit to training their soldiers to fill the gaps. If they can't agree on this then we may be destined to see the country slip away from us regardless of the progress militarily.
- Begin to seriously promote national unification under the banner of the state rather than that of individual sects. This is going to be the hardest thing to do and could take time, but to be truly successful this must happen.
I'm sure these could all be elaborated on quite a bit but since I am not running for national office I will put them out there for others to see and then hopefully policy makers will see them someday.
Janet Huckabee stumps for husband in Washington County today
When asked about gun rights, Janet Huckabee said the U.S. Constitution's second amendment is about more than sport shooting. She said the amendment was created to allow people to protect themselves and should remain that way."If someone wants to keep an AK-47 in their house, they should be allowed to. I have a .38 (caliber), .40-caliber Sig (Sauer) and a 9 mm Glock," Janet Huckabee said.
Yet another reason not to vote for Mike Huckabee and another reason why he won't win. He and his wife can keep their AK-47's in Arkansas and away from me, my family and my future children. No one needs an AK-47, NO ONE.
I dare Mike Huckabee to try and argue this point in open debate about why you should need an assault rifle with armor piercing bullets in your home. Better yet, let's send both him and his wife over to Iraq and Afghanistan to see how well they fare with their AK-47 rifles then if they are so great, I bet they wouldn't last 15 minutes but it would be a way to introduce them to what religious fanaticism is when mixed with weapons. It's funny how we could essentially get the same atmosphere in the US so easily if we did not keep people like him out of national public office, after all apparently he is a big proponent of both religion and guns which is exactly what you have in the middle east.
State of the Union: Same as Last Year + A Slowing Economy
Ok, so I know I will be ripped apart by the conservative readers out there for this but was there anything new in the State of the Union address this year? Here is my summarization of the address:
- Let's accomplish more in a bi-partisan atmosphere
- The economy is slowing
- The war in Iraq is and will be successful
- No Child Left Behind is successful
- Let's make my tax cuts permanent
- The housing market is still in trouble
- Stop putting ear-marks in spending bills
- We need to develop alternative energy sources and people tell me we have a thing called "Global Warming" going on
- By the way... If you attempt to send me anything that isn't exactly what I want, it will be vetoed. How's that for bi-partisan action!
So rather than saying what will be coming this year and all of the great things we are going to do, President Bush dwelled on the past and tried to convince us that he had done a good job in the past year. Shouldn't the achievements of the past year speak for themselves? Should we need this speech to try and convince us that everything finally went to plan? I would have liked to hear some plans for things that he hopes to accomplish that maybe are not what he would have attempted earlier in his presidency. Instead we got a regurgitation of what has already happened which is not what should be said in this type of forum.
I guess I am just a disappointed moderate that really has become completely disillusioned with the current administration. All I seem to ever hear are hollow promises and arguments that use half truths to try and convince me that things are not as bad as they sound. The only good thing to come of this presidency is that it has energized the population to finally take who they elect as president seriously again and get out there to make a choice. I just hope it is the right one.
