Anti-abortion group says Palin ‘walks her talk’ – CNN.com
"She's made some tough and courageous decisions and has not shied away from following her beliefs," she told CNN in a phone interview. "It's plausible a politician in a similar situation could have hidden the pregnancy."
Anti-abortion group says Palin 'walks her talk' - CNN.com.
OK, so once again we have a right-wing conservative group that thinks that Palin did the right thing by coming forward about her daughter's pregnancy. But no one is stating the obvious, that it would have been political suicide to not do so. She had two options, cover it up and let the rumors swirl around that the 3-moth old was actually her daughter's baby or announce the truth that while it wasn't her daughter's baby she was going to have one.
Even after she takes this step to just stop the rumor mill, it is not like her so called "pro-life" stance on this issue is a big shocker. What is she going to do, tell her daughter to get an abortion and really flush her chances of becoming VP down the toilet? I don't think so. She is going to flip-flop on the issue just like McCain has on just about every moderate stance he has ever held and claim that she is encouraging her daughter to have the baby because of her pro-life stance and that she is proud to be a grandparent. The funny thing here is that these conservatives behave no differently than anyone else that has to cover their butts in these situations. They take a fundamental stance that they have on birth control, abstinence and sex education and then marginalize it so they can emphasize the pro-life aspects of what really can be chalked up to a complete lack of common sense and likely bad parenting. I hate to tell everyone, but there are not many people that would be happy to see their 17 year old pregnant and unmarried. There is no doubt in my mind that the Palins are not happy either and are just trying to do damage control as the McCain campaign begins to wonder why they picked this woman.
This incident is just one of a series that proves the complete absurdity of the stance conservatives take on sex education and birth control. If they could come out from the fog that clearly seems to be clouding their thinking, they would clearly see that if they just educated their children a bit about basic human reproduction, then this would not be a big issue. So I leave it up to you to decide which it is, an inability to just see through to a clear solution to a simple problem or Sarah Palin's daughter really just doesn't have any common sense and she severly screwed up in an age where every teen should understand what sex actually is for biologically.
Bush: Let the Overwatch Begin
Yesterday on NPR I heard a story about how we are now going into the "overwatch" phase of the Iraq occupation and it just brought back memories of playing Halflife 2 and the Combine soldiers that Dr. Breen called "Overwatch" as well. It amazes me that we would call this operation a name like this as it is not something that evokes positive feelings by a country, its people or by people who disagree with the whole situation.
In fact the similarities are startlingly similar between the way Overwatch in Halflife 2 operated and the way we are in Iraq now. The US is trying to assert their dominance over a population that does not want to be conquered or converted into something they aren't. Democracy is fine, but they may not want US democracy or even our form of republican government. So instead we try and ram this ideology down their throats and expect them to like it? Force rarely achieve any success in these situations which is something it appears we have yet to learn. I would suggest all of you go play a couple of maps in Halflife 2 and look at the similarities, we may not be aliens taking over a planet, but we are still the outsiders asserting military rule on another state which is essentially the same deal.
USMH to Get Almost Full Funding!
ANNAPOLIS - After weeks of haggling, state lawmakers chiseled out an agreement Friday that leaves Hagerstown's university campus with nearly full funding next year.
The compromise between the House and Senate guarantees the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown $2 million for fiscal year 2009.
"We won," Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, said after Friday's session, which capped more than a week of public and private talks. "It was a tough battle. I'm not kidding. It was as tough as cold war."
We pulled through! After weeks of uncertainty and the chance that Hagerstown may lose one of its most valuable assets, the people of Washington county prevailed upon their lawmakers to choose the right path. Hagerstown is growing and it needs institutions of higher learning to continue teaching the next generation more valuable skills. Without this, Washington County will not have a chance at building its economic base by brining in more skilled workers and high-tech businesses.
Thank you to all who wrote their state delegates to make this happen.
Was Your Vegetarian Letter not Good Enough for the Post?
To the editor:
Think a small serving of meat each day is harmless? Think again. A new study from the National Cancer Institute showed that the more red and processed meat you eat, the greater your risk of developing a variety of cancers becomes.
In the study, the average red meat consumption was about 2.5 ounces of red meat per day for a person consuming the average 2,000-calorie diet. This study found an association between high consumption of red and processed meat and an increased risk for myeloma and colon, esophageal, liver, bladder and lung cancer.
The good news is that scientific studies also show that fruits, vegetables and other vegetarian foods can help prevent cancer. In addition, following a plant-based diet can help people trim their waistlines and maintain a healthy weight - another key factor in preventing cancer.

Letters to the Editor - The Herald-Mail Online - News for Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
Remind me why this was printed in the Herald Mail? I don't think anyone living in Washington DC is considering Hagerstown a huge media outlet for announcing National Cancer Institute findings. I would assume from this letter that your are a vegetarian and I would point out that humans are omnivores for a reason. We eat meat, we eat fruit and we eat vegetables because they all contain things we need. I bet if you ate oranges your entire life laced with all of the crazy pesticides they use you would have an increased risk of getting cancer too. I'm not a big red meat person, I prefer chicken myself, but people have been eating this for millennia and it hasn't seemed to kill off the majority of us yet.
Try taking a swim in the Anacostia and see what that does for your cancer risk and get back to me on whether I should worry about red meat.

Ann Coulter: Not Just Jumped the Shark but Off the Deep End
Captain's Quarters
I can understand why conservative voters like Ann Coulter, she is like a rabid badger that never stops clawing at the democratic opposition but I'm glad some are beginning to realize that she is down right nasty and pretty much a horrible human being. I guess my question to the conservative community is why did it take this long for you to realize how terrible she was and continues to be? This is not a new face that she is showing, in fact, she has always been this bad and she only gets PR because of her Shock Value to the republican cause. I would consider her like the Howard Stern of conservative politics: The opinions she voices get a lot of attention but when you get right down to it, there is not a whole lot of substance or intellectual content in them.
All in all, I applaud the realization that Ann Coulter is a nut by conservative America and maybe someday the world will be a better place as more start to realize this.
